No, it’s not a warzone or a protest. That’s right. Paris Saint-Germain have won the Champions League for the first time ever and are only one of two French clubs to ever accomplish it. But there’s something truly remarkable about this occasion.

There was always going to be a celebration in the streets of Paris but while some cities have open bus parades or stadium celebrations, Parisians have taken to the streets and you’d be forgiven for thinking that some unpopular policy was made law or an injustice was committed. In the 24+ hours since their title win, news outlets like The Washington Post have reported that 2 people have died and almost 500 have been arrested since the game. No football fan could have expected the insanity that would come after this game, and videos on social media have shown the aftermath.

Celebrations and absurdities aside, the win represents something else as well. In the build-up to kick-off, it was made clear what the Parisian fans wanted to dedicate the last trophy for their treble and the most challenging one to. A tifo was unveiled at the Allianz Arena that displayed Luis Enrique and his late daughter Xana, in a PSG shirt, planting a flag. For the football fans who remember when Luis Enrique last won the treble, then with Barcelona, it is clear what it not only means to PSG supporters in the way they depict their wishes, but also what it means to their manager. Even after the game, cameras pointed to Enrique’s shirt which was also a nod to his daughter and in post-match interviews, Enrique did not fail to dedicate the win to his daughter. Family in general was a theme after the match especially, as Enrique could be seen close to his family.

In terms of football, PSG has also made a statement. They made history as one of the youngest teams to ever lift the trophy but they have also overtaken the record for the largest scoreline to win the Champions League, scoring five over Inter Milan’s heads. It makes a statement to the world that a team that has heavily invested in super stars previously is perfectly able to start a project and win titles. As for Inter, they will be scratching their heads wondering what went wrong. It was only about a month ago that the treble was still on the line. Losses in the Coppa Italia to AC Milan and drawing against Lazio late in the season gave both Bologna and Napoli their titles, and left only the Champions League as a winnable trophy. After how they were dominated in the final, some players may be on the chopping block and Inter could be looking towards a busy summer.

Both Inter and PSG are set to appear in this summer’s club world cup. Time will tell if either club is set to add reinforcements to their summer campaign, but PSG looks to be the most set of the two with some depth in each position. There may not need to be too much rebuilding anyways as some players may have a good shot at personal accolades and awards when the Ballon D’or Ceremony eventually comes back around. Stay tuned here for our monthly transfer report if there are any.
